Thresher Shark, Alopias vulpinus
All the thresher sharks (Family Alopiidae) have an extremely long upper lobe of the caudal fin. The tail is used to herd and stun small fishes upon which the shark feeds.

The White Shark is a large species with a public profile to match. This species grows to at least 6 m in length (3000 kg) and is a powerful predator, however the fear that it provokes in many people may not be entirely warrented. Scientists are only recently building up knowledge on the biology, movements an vulnerability of this species.

Coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae
A few days before Christmas in 1938, a Coelacanth was caught at the mouth of the Chalumna River on the east coast of South Africa. The fish was caught in a shark gill net by Captain Goosen and his crew, who had no idea of the significance of their find. They thought the fish was bizarre enough to alert the local museum in the small South African town of East London.

The Goblin Shark has a shovel-like snout, flabby body, and a tail which has a weakly developed lower lobe (heterocercal). This species grows to 3.8m in length.

Prickly Dogfish, Oxynotus bruniensis
The Prickly Dogfish is recognised by its hump-backed body which has a flat lower surface, and is nearly triangular in cross-section. This species has prominent abdominal ridges, two sail-like dorsal fins which are each preceded by a spine, and lacks an anal fin. It is brown to grey in colour, although the dorsal fins and posterior margins of the pectorals and pelvics are often translucent to white. The skin of the Prickly Dogfish is very rough, giving rise to the common name.
