Materials Conservation - Preparing an Ethnographic Collection for the Worst in the Light of Past Experiences
The collections of an ethnographic and natural history museum contain a very high proportion of materials which have a high vulnerability to fire and water-damage. The Australian Museum's collections have been affected by a diverse range of minor disasters which would have a large cumulative effect if not handled correctly. Measures to protect the collection are described such as mobile protective housings for important artefacts. Treatments to water-damaged ethnographic artefacts are outlined.
