Abierto al público. La mayor colección de plantas vivas de España.El 17 de octubre de 1755, Fernando VI ordenó la creación del Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, que se instaló en la Huerta de Migas Calientes, en las inmediaciones de lo que hoy se denomina Puerta de Hierro, a orillas del río Manzanares. Contaba con más de 2000 plantas, recogidas por José Quer, botánico y cirujano, en sus numerosos viajes por la Península u obtenidas por intercambio con otros botánicos europeos. A partir de 1774, Carlos III dio instrucciones para su traslado al actual emplazamiento del paseo del Prado, donde se inaugura en 1781. Sabatini -arquitecto del Rey- y Juan de Villanueva al que debemos el Museo del Prado, el Observatorio Astronómico y otras obras- se hicieron cargo del proyecto. En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y bajo la protección directa de la Corona, la botánica española vivió una época de inusitado esplendor.En esos años se construyeron las tres terrazas escalonadas, se ordenaron las plantas según el método de Linneo -uno de los botánicos más importantes de la Historia- y se construyeron también la verja que rodea el Jardín, los emparrados y el invernáculo llamado Pabellón Villanueva -en el que se encuentra la cátedra donde impartió sus clases Antonio José Cavanilles. Desde su creación, en el Real Jardín Botánico se desarrolló la enseñanza de la Botánica, se auspiciaron expediciones a América y al Pacífico, se encargaron los dibujos de grandes colecciones de láminas de plantas y se acopiaron importantes herbarios que sirvieron de base para describir nuevas especies para la Ciencia.En 1808, la Guerra de la Independencia trajo al Jardín años de abandono y tristeza, en los que son destacables los esfuerzos de Mariano de La Gasca por mantenerlo dentro de las corrientes científicas europeas. En 1857, siendo Mariano de la Paz Graells director del Real Jardín, se realizaron reformas importantes que aún perduran, como el invernadero que lleva su nombre y la remodelación de la terraza superior. También en época de Graells se instaló un zoológico, que doce años más tarde, siendo ya director Miguel Colmeiro, se trasladó al Jardín del Buen Retiro. Puerta del Pabellón Villanueva tal y como aparece dibujada en el libro de Miguel Colmeiro, Bosquejo histórico y estadístico del Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, publicado en 1875. En la década de 1880 a 1890, el Jardín sufre importantes pérdidas. En 1882 se segregan dos hectáreas para construir el edificio que actualmente ocupa el Ministerio de Agricultura, con lo que su superficie queda ya reducida a las ocho hectáreas actuales. En 1886, un ciclón derribó en su recinto 564 árboles de gran valor. En el primer tercio de nuestro siglo se inician con seriedad las investigaciones en el campo de la micología, y adquieren un elevado nivel las desarrolladas en el de la micromicetología. En 1939, el Real Jardín Botánico pasa a depender del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. En 1942 es declarado Jardín Artístico. En 1974, tras décadas de penuria y abandono, fue cerrado al público para abordar profundas obras de restauración, que acabaron devolviéndole su estilo original. En 1981, coincidiendo con el bicentenario de su traslado, fueron inauguradas las reformas por SS.MM. los Reyes de España. En 1993 SS.MM. los Reyes inauguraron el moderno invernadero de exhibición.
